Philosophical Enquiry is an accessible and engaging way to think with others and to think for yourself – at every age and stage of life.

For over thirty years, Thoughtful has advanced oracy in schools, developing speaking and listening skills alongside the vitally important capacity to think.

Over 50 years of international research establishes Philosophy for Children (P4C) as a powerful pedagogy for realising the kinds of cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes that transform learning and lives.

Established in 1992 as SAPERE, we are the UK’s longest-running charity dedicated to realising the personal and public value of philosophical enquiry. In 2025, SAPERE became Thoughtful – but our vision, mission, and values remain unchanged.

Our programmes reach thousands of beneficiaries each year. Among them are the 1.67 million children who have taken part in regular P4C as a result of our teacher training provision.

Thoughtful is led by experts in philosophy, education, and the charity sector who share a commitment to rigorous dialogue and inclusive education.

We work with people of all ages, stages, and levels of experience, from preschool children to professional philosophers, with a particular focus on addressing educational disadvantage.
