Dr Grace Lockrobin
Director of Philosophy and Education & Thoughtful Trainer
Dr Grace Lockrobin co-leads Thoughtful with Emma Swinn. As Director of Philosophy and Education, she is responsible for the content and quality of the charity’s programmes and projects. She works directly with beneficiaries in schools and communities as a trainer, practitioner, and consultant, and regularly speaks and writes about P4C.
Grace has worked as a public philosopher in schools, universities, and communities for over twenty years. She has facilitated philosophical enquiry with thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds and supported hundreds of facilitators to do the same.
She joined Thoughtful (formerly SAPERE) in 2008, became a trainer in 2014, and was appointed Co-Director in 2022. In 2008, Grace also founded Thinking Space, a not-for-profit developing creative and collaborative approaches to philosophical enquiry. From 2006 to 2022, she taught philosophy and applied ethics at the University of Leeds and IDEA where she led a philosophy outreach programme and used philosophical enquiry in disciplines including medicine, business, and engineering. In 2020, she co-edited Philosophy and Community, a book on the theory and practice of public philosophy. She has been a PESGB keynote speaker and has appeared on BBC2 and Radio 4.
Grace is a Fellow of Advance HE, a Board Member of the Sophia Network, an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Philosophy in Schools, and a Council Member of TRIP. She was awarded a PhD in Philosophy of Education by the UCL Institute of Education in 2025.
She lives in Sheffield with her husband and two sons.
