Emma Swinn MBE
Director of Operations and Development
Emma is Co-Director of Thoughtful, and has been working in Philosophy for Children and Communities for 20 years. She is the current President of SOPHIA - the European Foundation for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children and in her spare time she can be found baking bread and occasionally acting.
As Director of Operations and Development Emma leads strategy, partnerships and organisational development, working with schools, trusts and universities to embed high-quality philosophical enquiry and dialogue across all phases of education.
Emma previously co-founded and led The Philosophy Foundation, a charity delivering philosophy in schools and other learning communities, where she was awarded an MBE for innovation.
She is a Visiting Research Associate at King’s College London, with research interests spanning critical thinking, oracy, citizenship and pupil wellbeing. Emma has contributed to published work on philosophy in education and is a regular speaker at conferences and professional gatherings in the UK and beyond. Emma has recently been invited to be an Associate Scholar at Koin-Ed, a research, consultancy and coaching company based on values-driven practice.
Emma volunteers for Scene and Heard, a children’s charity in Somers Town as an actor, dramaturg and director. She lives in London with her partner and daughter.
