Creative Aid: Philosophy of art, in prisons

Thoughtful is proud to partner with Blue Cabin on Creative Aid, a three-year project funded by The National Lottery Community Fund and delivered in collaboration with Nepacs at HMP Deerbolt. The project responds to the significant over-representation of care-experienced young people in prison, where around one third of the population at Deerbolt has a care background.

Our role is to facilitate philosophy workshops for both prisoners and the public, creating reflective spaces where participants can engage deeply with the artwork produced through the programme and explore their identities as artists. Through critical dialogue, Thoughtful facilitators Andy West (author of The Life Inside) and Dr Grace Lockrobin are supporting participants to articulate their experiences, build confidence, and develop a stronger sense of self and belonging.

The wider Creative Aid project combines artist-led workshops with opportunities to achieve Arts Award accreditation, recognising the powerful role creativity plays in improving wellbeing, strengthening relationships, and supporting rehabilitation. The work has produced stunning online galleries that showcase the participants’ work.

Thoughtful’s contribution complements Blue Cabin’s work by encouraging participants to think philosophically about their work and their place in the world, helping to foster dignity and promote meaningful connection within and beyond prison.
